09:40 This has not been a good month for technology. All three laptops at home are dead. My work one finally died and the desktop... #

09:42 The desktop won't stay on for more than 15 minutes. My cell phone is also on it's last legs. New laptop and cell phone ordered.... #

09:43 But it is at least a week until I get either one. And no ETA on the work laptop. While I don't mind technology breaks, this is hell. #

09:47 Worst part is that I have to be at a client on monday... #

09:54 On the plus side, the Mac lamp still works beautifull and looks better than any other screen in the house, now if it was just portable... #

Automatically shipped by LoudTwitter

Yet another case of Christians acting Scary

After overzealous Christians have repeatedly stated that the bible is sacrosanct and that it is a perfect document created by God...apparently...some have found it a little too liberal.

What the hell?

At least two of the stated goals contradict each other.

And um...if we're gonna reinterpret the bible, might it not be better to use something like Strong's Exhaustive Bible Concordance and retranslate each word with context. I mean, if you're going to say something is the work of God wouldn't you ... I don't know ... want to know what God actually said ... you know ... in context?

The idea of a Wikipedia style free for all rewording of the bible makes me slightly queasy... and spawns a spontaneous desire to gather the slash ficers and make a small, non violent protest all over it. Let's see.....what did Noah's sons do on that long cruise...they obviously weren't doing it with their wives....

Thank you

I want to thank all of you that have reached out to me after the passing of my wee fuzzy.

Your thoughts and hugs mean a lot to me.

I have had ferrets for nearly 15 years straight. And this is the very very first time that I have been without a ferret in those 15 years. It is a hard adjustment. Especially when I look at the spot where here cage once stood.

I keep wanting to turn around and go into the kitchen to check on her. Or watch her sleep as I sometimes did.

As I told my mom, so much of my life is in my head. My job is mentallly challenging. I write, I talk to people on line. All passive mental things. Ferrets for me provide the counterpoint. They are creatures of chaos and motion. They are purely physical. They leap and tumbble and poke and jump moving in a crazy fashion that seems born out of pure random.

Even as Shkoda was getting sicker, she still found the energy to crawl under the cover and nip my toes in the morning until I woke up and cuddled her just like she did when she was a baby and my bed was the biggest play area she could handle.

There is something about ferrets. They may not be everyon's perfect pet. They take a lot of patience. They require nip training. They are never perfect with the litterbox even if they know better (Cassidy's favorite game was hide and go poop). But for me they are the perfect pet.

I have been owned by cats and birds and hamsters (who commited suicide) and mice but nothing quite resonates like a ferret. I like them well enough.

And having watched me cry over the loss of every one of my fuzzies, people keep suggesting that I get something longer lived. It would be easier they say.

But I can't quite imagine a life without ferrets.

And as much as I loved Shkoda and will always miss her, I know that I will get another ferret. Though she will always stand out. The gold standard of fuzzies.

From the way she tipped over my teacup to get a sip to the way she danced for bananas she was the most unique creature to have touched my life. And as hard as her death is to bare, I would not trade it for not having known her. She was a tiny treasure. A will-o-wisp that guided me through some very very dark times.

I am not ready to move on yet. I am still morning her, but soon.

No matter how many people fill your life, only an animal can truly make it complete.

Saying Goodbye to our Fuzzy Friends

Today at 9:45, my little fuzzy girl, Shkoda slipped soundlessly away from me.

She was born around the middle of June and I brought her home August 3rd. She cried for three days straight and was so tiny that she couldn't eat solid food.

Of all the ferrets I have ever owned she was the most willful, most intelligent, and most human centric. She ate people food, insisted that she have dinner with us and thought socks were fine to chew on even though she knew feet were not.

She was only 6 years old. And while ferrets live brief lives I thought for sure that she was going to be around a few more years...at least one more year.

She saw me through so so so much. She was my sanity savor through my brother's cancer, it's recurrence, and through Kelly's death. Through it all, she did her utmost to be silly and snuggly and keept me going through the worst of times.

She was the smartest of all my fuzzies, figuring out zippers, and drawer pulls. She understood the power of cute. And she knew all too well how irresistible she really was using it to her advantage as often as possible so as to be picked up and snuggled. She was emotionally manipulative. She figured out that laying on bare wire and sighing at passing people got her cuddled or at least a treat, and she did everything in her power to rearange her cage to be able to display her talents to their best effect. And all in all did her best to live up to her name which means mischief in Russian.

The last few months her health started to decline. And a couple of weeks ago she started getting really lethargic. Unfortunately the ferret vet that I have known and trusted for years retired and most vets around her just don't know enough about these slinky animals. So when I took her to the vet two weeks ago they probably missed something. And she got a little better. So I thought I had time to find a better vet. That time ran out yesterday when she took a huge turn for the worst.

She stopped eating and drinking and just wanted to be held. I indulged her for most of last night and sped her off to a newly recommended vet this morning. But I guess it was too little too late as she seemed to keep sliding all afternoon. By evening she was barely able to lift her head, doing so only when I made as if I was going to move away from her. By 8 she began to slip in and out of consciousness and by 9 she fell into a deep comma. Her breathing became labored.

I placed her on my chest, tucked under my chin and just held her trying to find a way to ease her breathing.

At 9:45 she seemed to wake up, rolled slightly to the side as if to give me one last parting glance, shuddered delicately and melted away. I held her for a long time after, stroking her side as the tears I was suppressing all evening started to flow in short, painful gasps.

Of all my ferrets she was hardest to lose. I will miss her terribly.

I can't bare the idea of just giving her up, so tomorrow, I am going to find a nice shady spot in my yard and bury her so that she will always be close. I think she would have liked it that way. She was a good rat like that.

And hopefully, some day, I will meet her again across the rainbow bridge.

17:39 Supermarket disappointment turned culinary treasure...the market didn't have enough beef for the burgers I wanted to make. #

17:40 So I bought some ground lamb and some ground veal and mixed. Result: flavorful, tender, juicy burgers. Add a bit of sharp cheddar - yumm! #

Automatically shipped by LoudTwitter

Ever been curious about Otzi? You know the neolithic man they found in the alps due to global warming?

Well now you can:http://iceman.eurac.edu/

You can look at him from every possible angle, in great and painful detail. You can examine his tattoos and even see him in 3D.

So cool!

Tuiles with Whipped Crème Fraiche Cooking Debauchery

Three years and a half years ago, when I gave up hydrogenated oils and ingredient lists that required a chemistry degree, I knew that there would be a few things I would miss. There aren’t many things mind you. It’s incredible but almost everything tastes better when it is made from real ingredients. This having been said, there are still a few things that I pine away for.

Those little pirouette cookies from Pepperidge Farm rank high on that list.

I am a die hard, crisp and buttery cookie fan. Until I tried this recipe, given the choice to eat only one cookie for the rest of my life, I would have said short bread. This recipe has shaken my devotion.

It has the lovely subtle butteriness of shortbread but with a thin crisp edge that sings a siren song to the caramel lover in me.
